I’m Spencer Charles, a multidisciplinary artist and art director from Newark, New Jersey, currently based between Atlanta and New York. My creative foundation began early—rooted in music, movement, and storytelling—and has always lived at the intersection of culture and expression.
I originally studied music at Morehouse College before shifting into journalism, where writing about Atlanta’s underground music and art scenes introduced me to photography. What began as a requirement for an internship quickly became a form of therapy and connection—an exchange of energy between myself and the people I photograph that continues to shape my work today.
My photography lives firmly in the fine art space, often centered on portraiture that explores Black identity, sensuality, spirituality, and intimacy. Influenced by jazz, hip-hop, and the visual language of 1970s R&B album covers, my work blends timelessness with cultural specificity. My photographic work has been published across three self-released books and exhibited internationally.
I’m currently expanding my practice into art direction, bringing a photographer’s eye to concept development, visual systems, and storytelling across fashion, lifestyle, and culture-driven brands. Whether behind the camera or leading a visual narrative, my work is driven by emotion, intention, and atmosphere.
I continue to develop new projects across both disciplines.
